Business Development Director

Location: Toronto, Canada

 

Planeterra is in search of a Business Development Director with a background in both private and not-for-profit sectors to build a sustainable revenue structure for Planeterra that supports its growth.

 

Established in 2003, by global adventure travel company G Adventures’ Founder, Bruce Poon Tip, Planeterra Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect our partners and local communities to the benefits of tourism by developing and supporting community-owned enterprises while promoting more responsible travel.

 

Responsibilities

  • Translate Planeterra’s value proposition into the commercial space to strengthen existing partnerships and grow revenue from new corporate partners
  • Build and manage a Board and governance structure for Planeterra across the US and Canadian organizations
  • Develop and manage implementation of  business development strategies to increase growth
  • Lead revenue growth and communication functions within the organization
  • Manage a small team effectively including: performance management, coaching and development of reporting staff
  • Collaborate with departments across G Adventures to ensure effective communication and leveraging of resources
  • Develop and lead implementation of communications plan in order to effectively drive revenue growth objectives
  • Establish an effective fundraising tracking and reconciliation process
  • Develop and manage proposals and applications to funders and foundations (institutional, family and corporate), including budgets
  • Cultivate, solicit, steward and recognize planned giving donors and prospects, in person, and by phone, email and mail in order to meet specific donor expectations

 

Requirements

  • 10+ years’ business development experience in both private and not-for-profit sectors
  • University degree with a focus on international business or an appropriate combination of education and experience
  • Experience with fundraising platforms and fundraising accounting processes
  • Proven success in partnership development or corporate sponsorship and/or meeting fundraising targets
  • Business savvy, with entrepreneurial focus and a thorough understanding of how a business operates
  • Client oriented, with a proven ability to build relationships
  • Proven leadership skills with an ability to effectively manage staff
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Results oriented, highly driven and innovative
  • Exceptional ability to prioritize and multitask

Community Fundraising Lead

Location: Toronto, Canada

 

Planeterra is in search of a Community Fundraising Lead, with a background working in not-for-profit organizations, to build community around our cause to generate donations and to play a key role in the development and implementation of our fundraising strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and design events and methods to enable third party community mobilization and fundraising
  • Use social media and other communications tools to mobilize individuals and groups to take part in fundraising and other community mobilization activities
  • Balance prospecting and new accounts with key account stewardship and development
  • Manage the communities through the process and celebrate their success
  • Implement communications strategies designed to support key stakeholder audiences and grow their commitment and lifetime value to the organization
  • Collaborate effectively across all departments to leverage resources
  • Compile and maintain an inventory of existing and prospective donors
  • Assist Business Development Director with donor stewardship
  • Lead all communications including website maintenance, newsletters, social media, PR and any other methods deemed necessary to achieve fundraising goals

 

Requirements

  • 5-7 years’ experience as lead coordinator for fundraising initiatives in a not-for-profit
  • University degree or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Demonstrated event planning/coordination and project management skills
  • Experienced and confident developing relationships and fundraising initiatives
  • Experience with various donation platforms (and an understanding of pros and cons of different platforms)
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Ability to plan effectively, problem solve and exercise sound judgement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong client focus
  • Proactive, self-motivated and resourceful

Community Development Specialist – Central America (Part time)

Location: San Jose (ideal)

Planeterra is the nonprofit partner of the small-group travel company, G Adventures. Planeterra help local businesses in travel destinations that are making a positive impact on their communities, supporting them to create a successful tourism experience, harnessing the travel industry to invest in rural and underserved communities around the globe, and then linking them into G Adventures travel itineraries.

 

Reporting in to the Program Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Central America Community Development Specialist will play a support role within the global Planeterra team, to help maintain and monitor existing Planeterra partner relationships with communities and non profit organizations in the Central America and Caribbean region.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

 

  • Monitoring of our existing projects in Central America.
  • Work closely with community partners to support them with technical assistance to maintain and keep growing the community’s businesses and social enterprises supported by Planeterra.
  • Gather Planeterra impact data (via partner and community surveys).
  • Build a strong, friendly and open relationship between communities and our corporate partners (G Adventures).
  • Assist the growth of the social enterprises supported by Planeterra to have more market access.
  • Ensure that Planeterra community partners are continuing to evolve and improve their social enterprise and community businesses based on the current companies that use their services.
  • Be a strong voice of Planeterra among the community members in locations where Planeterra works.
  • Promotion of Planeterra brand among the local partners.
  • Any other activity needed by Planeterra team or Planeterra corporate partner (G Adventures)

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • 2+ years of experience working in tourism with communities – related to tourism projects or community development projects.
  • 2+ years of experience working in tourism industry (Operations, tour leader, etc.)
  • Knowledge of tourism industry.
  • Exceptional communication skills with rural community’s members.
  • Knowledge to lead, support social enterprises in tourism.
  • Advanced Spanish skills, both written and oral.
  • Intermediate English language skills (written and oral) ideal.
  • Ideally living in San Jose or other Central América countries.

 

TIME COMMITMENT AND COMPENSATION

 

  • Estimated time is 1-2 days per week
  • Compensation will be on a monthly basis, invoiced in USD by contractor
