No matter where you live, you are directly affected by the health of our oceans. Our own personal health and livelihoods are deeply interconnected with the wellbeing of the oceans. Tourism is just one of many industries that are dependent on the oceans for economic gain.

Tourists are drawn to the oceans for different reasons. Some use the ocean as a way of transportation while others seek adventure or relaxation. Some tourists are drawn to the life within our oceans – whether its intricate coral reefs or the creatures that live nearby. It is Planeterra’s position to uplift the people and places impacted by tourism through the tourism industry itself. With responsible programs and partners in place, tourism has the potential to protect and conserve life within our oceans, while exposing more people to limitless experiences the vast waters have to offer.

Planeterra’s development model empowers communities by working with women, youth, and indigenous populations across the world to develop sustainable enterprises that are integrated into the tourism supply chain. Planeterra provides the capacity building and catalyst grants to get these social enterprises off the ground.  Income generated through these initiatives are often reinvested in the things that matter – like education, healthcare, and sanitation. These business are also working to reduce urban migration, conserve traditional cultures, empower women, and protect the environment.

Planeterra and G Adventures prioritizes four areas of ocean health to help protect the environment, these include:

1) Protecting fragile ecosystems and the flora and fauna that call it home
2) Combating ocean waste
3) Supporting research and science that works to understand the changing ocean climate
4) Supporting the next generation of ocean stewards through community knowledge
