Laem Sak Tourism Community Enterprise
Ao Luk, Krabi, Thailand
Despite managing the Laem Sak Tourism Community Enterprise in their village since 2014, the Laem Sak tourism community had not had much success reaching the tourism market, as it is considered to be in an isolated area, far away from where tourists tend to travel. In fact, Laem Sak is one of the hidden gems of Southern Thailand, with its beautiful sea, mangroves, islands, cultural diversification, foods, and rich natural resources. Being a community neighbouring a fragile marine ecosystem, there was a real need to attract visitors to Ao Luk’s community-run long-tail boat trips, and traditional meals, as a more responsible way to experience the Andaman Sea.
Planeterra partnered with the North Andaman Network (NAN), a local non-profit organization that helps to connect and provide capacity training in marine operation and safety, in order to upgrade the Laem Sak Tourism Community Enterprises’ tours. This included the purchase of new equipment for marine tours, and upgrades that would enable them to receive travellers for active hike, bike and kayak journeys.
Planeterra also provided the enterprise with a link to G Adventures, who are now bringing travellers to experience the community by enjoying the island hopping tour, 3-day sea kayaking with locals, hands on activities including batik making, planting sea-grapes and experiencing local foods. These programs are supporting the women, men and youth of this community.
The primary positive social impacts of this collaboration will be increased revenue flow to the Laem Sak tourism Community Enterprise, as well as the promotion of local businesses and projects. Investments in the tourism service’s various components provide the local partners with the necessary tools and resources to improve the overall quality of their projects, develop sustainable new revenue streams and receive tourists in a professional manner. Ultimately, these improvements will increase the community enterprise’s social, economic and environmental impact while generating additional jobs and positive visibility for the community.
