North Pacific Gyre
The scale of trash and debris in the oceans is enormous. One place where this problem can be prominently seen is the North Pacific Gyre, or the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. This is where the four major ocean currents come together and create a plastic vortex. Gyres, circulating ocean currents, play a critical role in the movement of debris in our oceans. The task of cleaning this debris has been seen as impossible - yet we must do something.
Planeterra provided $27,000 CAD to Project Kaisei - an ocean cleanup initiative by the Ocean Voyages Institute. This project works to support North Pacific Gyre Marine Debris Recovery Plans. It also works to collect important data which can give insight into the size and positioning of the plastic vortex. Planeterra’s funding allowed for continued research, as well as the expansion of scale for the gyres cleanup and recovery efforts.
Planeterra’s investment in Project Kaisei helps to work towards the protection of marine life as well as the health and safety of people. The project utilized the support of commercial maritime equipment -- such as vessels, tugs and barges – in order to increase the efficiency of the ocean clean-up.
