Sambor Preikuk Community Based Tourism (Phnom Penh-Siem Reap)

Sambor Preikuk is a UNESCO World Heritage site supported by 7 villages and around 8,000 residents, with about half of the community benefiting from tourism.

Tourism creates local income through temple tours, homestays, community restaurants, guiding, weaving, cycling tours, and local transport. Around 40 women are involved in weaving, helping keep traditional skills active.

Kampong Phlouk is a lakeside community near Tonlé Sap Lake and part of the UNESCO Biosphere area. The village is known for stilted homes built to adapt to seasonal flooding and for a way of life closely connected to the lake and wetlands.

Tourism plays a key role in local livelihoods. Over 1,000 boats are operated through a community Boat Association, providing income for many families across the village.

Tuk Tuk Lady Driver is an association that creates opportunities for women to work in the tourism transport sector in Siem Reap.

It provides safe and reliable tuk-tuk (remorque) services, generating income for women who often support their households as primary earners. This strengthens financial independence and increases women’s participation in the local tourism economy.

For travellers, Tuk Tuk Lady Driver offers transport between local experiences, including community meals, cultural performances, and hotels, while providing insight into daily life in the area.

Phare Circus & School is a community initiative in Siem Reap that provides arts education and vocational training for young people, many from vulnerable backgrounds.

With more than 1,200 students enrolled, the school offers training in theatre, music, acrobatics, and circus arts, alongside broader social support and education. The aim is to create access to skills and opportunities that can support long-term livelihoods.

Students aged 18 and above may go on to perform in Phare Circus shows in Siem Reap. These performances are both a professional pathway for graduates and a source of income that helps fund free training and education for current students.

New Hope is a social enterprise that uses hospitality training to support education, health, and livelihoods for children and young people in the Mondul Bei community.

The program runs three schools supporting around 480 students, including preschool education and vocational training. Around 90 participants are currently engaged in hands-on training, including hospitality skills such as baking and barista work, helping young people build pathways into employment.

Revenue from the training restaurant funds these programmes, including education, healthcare access, clean water initiatives, and community services. This approach responds to multiple community needs while creating opportunities for long-term skills development.

The initiative works with more than 300 artisans, supported by 60 full-time staff and 30 homeworkers, creating flexible, home-based job opportunities that help individuals build income and long-term economic independence. It also promotes sustainability and circular economy practices by recycling around 30 tons of materials each year into a wide range of upcycled products. 

With its own design team, Fair Trade license, and exports to international markets, Villageworks combines social impact with strong market access. Revenue from product sales helps sustain employment opportunities and expand support for marginalized communities. 

For visitors, Villageworks offers hands-on upcycling and handicraft workshops, including eco-printing and bracelet-making experiences for small groups.

Friends The Restaurant is a social enterprise in Phnom Penh operated by Friends-International and Mith Samlanh that creates hospitality training and employment pathways for marginalized youth, including former street-connected children and vulnerable young adults.

Located near the National Museum of Cambodia, the restaurant combines professional culinary training with real-world experience in customer service, kitchen operations, teamwork, and hospitality management. Trainees work alongside experienced professionals in a fully operational restaurant, building practical skills that support long-term careers in Cambodia’s tourism and hospitality sector.

The restaurant operates as a sustainable social enterprise, where revenue from dining helps support training programs and expand economic opportunities for young people.
