Cynthia will be running the Seattle Marathon this year, and is hoping to raise $2 for every kilometre she runs while training!
A little history: The first marathon commemorated the run of the soldier Pheidippides from a battlefield near the town of Marathon, Greece, to Athens in 490 B.C. According to legend, Pheidippides ran the approximately 25 miles to announce the defeat of the Persians to some anxious Athenians. Not quite in mid-season shape, he delivered the message “Niki!” (Victory!) then keeled over and died. For the 1908 London Olympics, the course was laid out from Windsor Castle to White City stadium, about 26 miles. However, to locate the finish line in front of the royal family’s viewing box, an extra 385 yards was added inside the stadium.
The plan: Training for a marathon typically takes about 4 months and covers at least 500km, 50 hills and 4 weeks of speed training. I am registered for the Seattle Marathon, November 26th and hope to raise $2 for every kilometre I run during the training for a total of $1,000. One of the most amazing race experiences is being in the company of other runners, so I am joined by other G employees around the world who have set their own goals for fundraising and distance.
